    THE OUTCOME:

As an indicator of its distinctive achievements in such a short span, the Delhi State Cancer Institute has seen a rapid rise in the numbers of patients attending and receiving treatment here ever since its inception. Census of patients attending this Institute has risen from 26,308 in 2006 to 1,60,993 in 2009, with average daily attendance of about 1000-1200 patients in various sections of the Institute, as detailed below:

About 500-600 patients in the OPD, about 80 – 100 patients in day-care chemotherapy section, about 100-150 patients for supportive day-care treatment, and about 200-225 patients on radiation treatment daily. This is likely to go up further as the facilities expand in due course.

NO WAITING LIST OR APPOINTMENT for any test or treatment – At present, the Institute is providing absolutely free facilities to all the cancer patients attending in the General OPD. The Private Ward facilities for various categories has been added recently, but charges for various services in the Private category are within the convenient reach of the public.

The Institute is being visited by doctors/scientists from reputed international institutions who have offered support to DSCI for training abroad of some of our staff in latest concepts in the field and for having academic, clinical and research collaborations with DSCI in various areas of mutual benefits in public interest.

As per its plans, the Delhi State Cancer Institute shall soon emerge out as an institution of excellence and as a reputed ‘World Class’ set up in the field of Oncology by providing state-of-the-art facilities for comprehensive management of cancers under one roof within next one years and with an aim to establish a chain of such centres in other parts of Delhi to provide a seamless cover for care of cancer patients near their doorsteps.

The Institute shall ensure to keep pace with the latest facilities, both qualitatively as well as quantitatively, at any given timeto maintain the highest standards of professional and academic excellence – ALWAYS!

DSCI has also commissioned highly specialized Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)facility from the World Cancer Day on 4th February 2007.

SRS and SRT are special techniques for delivering highly focused and localized beams of radiation treatment with extreme precision to a small tumour situated inside the body.

This technique can be applied for any region of the body, but this has greatest significance for small, deep seated lesions in brain where surgical intervention is technically difficult, risky or not feasible. Accuracy levels of 1-2 mm are maintained in this treatment.

Facility for such treatment is available in only a few cancer institutes in the county – mainly in private set ups where cost of such treatment varies between Rs. 75 thousands to Rs. 2 Lakhs for one patient>.  THIS FACILITY IS PRESENTLY AVAILABLE FREE AT THE DSCI.
